Wrestle with it...
Lent - Ash Wednesday

Today is the start of lent. Some people say that lent is about giving stuff up, some about starting things, but in truth it’s both…

… I give up chocolate, because it’s bad for you….

… so instead I take on lettuce…

… Hmmm, bad example.

I’m not sure what about turn in my life lent will bring, but I would like that which is not good to be replaced by all that is good and for more than 40 days…

… there’s plenty in me that is decayed. There is plenty in me that is untapped potential but I’m hoping lent is more about the latter…

I’ll blog as I go if you don’t mind. I’m not afraid of transparency, or intentionally provoking and happy lent…

Pints of view #1

We’ve started this thing…

… It’s a thing because I’m not sure what it is.  Some could say it is a more accessible cell group as part of our local parish church, some would perhaps say it is a fresh expression of church, and some would say it heresy…

… Whatever label you want to put on it, pints of view is really about people meeting together (in a pub in this case), enjoying hospitality and exploring questions of Christian faith and life…

… Some may say this is a form of communion perhaps, or at least part of it…

… It hopefully is a safe place to ask any question.  The question is more important than the answer and typically the Church has tried to give answers to the questions most people are not asking.  Answers are important but what I find is that people prefer  to reach their own conclusions.  It’s our job to help them in that process…

… I think…

So 5 of us all at different points in the journey of faith and life…

… I’m just praying I don’t screw it up!
Next pint of view blog is on vegetarianism, climate change and Christians.

Worth a listen….

Restart.

My email randomly reminded me of my blog I started 3 years ago, maybe 2ish.

I was a different man then.

Don’t get me wrong I was and still am a Christian, passionate about all that stuff and communicating good news in effective and fresh ways….

That’s still me, but I was a different man back then.

Driven not surrendered.
Ambitious not content.
Angry not at peace.
Arrogant not humble.

I was a different man then.

Not that I was like that all the time but those things ruled my character. I still struggle with these things and others but they don’t rule me like they used to. And there were good things about me back then too, and I know that.

But I was a different man back then. Since then let’s say some refining has occurred.

So to all those I’ve ever directly or indirectly hurt, screwed over , shafted, to those whom I didn’t listen to, ignored, to those whom I misunderstood, misjudged or just judged then sincerely I was wrong, stupid and I’m sorry.

I was a different man back then.

But this I know to be true:

God reconciles, redeems, restores and restarts.

Need a restart?

GET OUT…

This is a short one… I’ve just come back from a “conversation” within the Diocese of Coventry regarding Fresh Expressions…

Logn story short, there is no shortage of imagination and energy about reshaping the Church so that we may engage with people and communities who would not normally “go to church”…

"We have a gospel to proclaim" as the hymn goes but if we think we’re still in 1982 doing mission england and Billy Graham then we need to have a rethink.

I’m encouraged because:

1) I feel confirmation on my own calling and encouraged by what God is beginning to do with the business community;

2) There is real energy to do something different led and released by the Bishop of Coventry;

3) God is doing great stuff already e.g coffee tots;

4) There is a real sense that people are waking up to the fact that we are to “go” and that this is just as much about our identity as it is our activity.

5) And relating to point 1, wow the next 12 months in Wood End are going to be cool!

Come on, come on, come on!!!!!!

I remember the last Bishop of Coventry telling us to “get out”, and he really meant it.  I think we might just be doing that…

The Victory of Justice - Tony Campolo

I  often ask my students at Eastern [University], why did Jesus come into the world? Why did he leave the glories of heaven and break into history? What was he out to do? If he were to write out his mission statement, how would it read? Good question! Everybody is writing out mission statements. What would be his?

So I had the honour of leading worship with friends at Coventry Cathedral the other Sunday.  I don’t generally do church buildings, and I’m really an advocate of us breaking out of what I call “four wall worship” but Coventry Cathedral ironically is different.  It’s whole essense screams of the Glory of God, and is actually a “thin place”.
As we sound checked I was facing the baptistry window and had one of those “moments” when all you can do is be lost in “wonder, love and praise”…

Fightclub and fighting against injustice…

So we (Fightclub) met yesterday at Coffeetots a brand new cafe that is being opened in the heart of the city aimed at befriending Mum’s and their kids, particularly those Mum’s who are from “disadvantaged” communities…

… and it was good to pray around the venue, and for our friends who have had this vision for a while now.  There was a definite sense that this space would be a “thin place, where the distance between heaven and earth is negligable” and that the cafe would have an impact throughout the whole city arcade…
